Abu Dhabi’s status as a global leisure and tourism powerhouse is set for an extraordinary leap forward, as Mubadala Investment Company officially breaks ground on the ambitious Al Maryah Island Waterfront enhancement project. This monumental redevelopment promises to transform the island’s coastline into a dazzling new landmark, featuring an AI-powered fountain with a glowing sphere at its heart, set to redefine urban entertainment and lifestyle experiences in the capital.
The ceremonial groundbreaking, officiated by Waleed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi, Mubadala’s Deputy Group CEO, and Dr. Bakheet Al Katheeri, CEO of UAE Investments, marked the official commencement of what is slated to be one of Abu Dhabi’s most striking new attractions. The project is a strategic investment by Mubadala, reinforcing Al Maryah Island’s position as a premier destination for residents and global visitors.
At the very core of this visionary revamp lies an awe-inspiring 30-meter-tall luminous sphere, dramatically poised within the bay. This glowing orb will be enveloped in flowing water and surrounded by a symphony of over 1,000 AI-powered water jets, capable of soaring more than 75 meters into the sky. These mesmerizing water features will be meticulously choreographed to music composed by none other than Ramin Djawadi, the acclaimed composer behind the iconic scores of “Game of Thrones” and other cinematic masterpieces. The dazzling display is being designed by WET, the globally renowned water feature specialists responsible for the Dubai Fountain and the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas.
“The Al Maryah Waterfront enhancement project is a strategic investment in the future of Al Maryah Island,” stated Dr. Bakheet Al Katheeri. “This project will deliver iconic elements that elevate the quality of life and offer a diverse experience for visitors, while reinforcing the island’s position as a premier lifestyle destination.”
Beyond this spectacular centerpiece, the upgraded waterfront will introduce a suite of world-class features designed to enhance public life and leisure:
- Sea Boardwalk Extension: A new, extended boardwalk will provide direct, scenic access to the water’s edge, perfect for leisurely strolls and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
- Shaded Outdoor Cooling Systems: A testament to Abu Dhabi’s commitment to year-round comfort, these innovative cooling zones will allow visitors to enjoy the outdoor spaces even during the warmer months.
- New Food & Beverage Zones: A diverse array of new dining experiences, from casual eateries to high-end restaurants, will cater to every palate, establishing the waterfront as a culinary hotspot.
- Multi-Use Public Event Spaces: Flexible and dynamic public areas will be created, designed to host a variety of cultural events, festivals, concerts, and community gatherings, further cementing the island’s role as a vibrant entertainment hub.
The Al Maryah Island, previously known as Sowwah Island, has been meticulously developed by Mubadala since 2007, evolving into a thriving financial hub (home to Abu Dhabi Global Market), a luxury retail and dining destination (The Galleria), and a world-class healthcare provider (Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi). This latest enhancement underscores Abu Dhabi’s relentless pursuit of innovative urban development and its vision to become a magnet for both domestic and international tourism, promising an unparalleled experience where technology, nature, and entertainment converge. While an exact opening date has not yet been disclosed, construction is already well underway on what is sure to be one of the capital’s most talked-about attractions.
