QRCS Approves New Aid Shipment to Support Displaced People

Qatar Red Crescent Society’s (QRCS) representation office in Sudan has completed customs clearance for a new humanitarian aid shipment provided by the State of Qatar. The aid is part of the ongoing efforts to support victims of the conflict in the country.

The shipment includes high-tech blood analyzer machines, medical consumables, essential medicines, diapers, and food items, all sourced from QRCS’s warehouse in Doha. This aid comes as a relief for those affected by the war in Sudan.

The delivery of the humanitarian aid was attended by Rashid Al Muqreh, Chargé d’Affairs of the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Sudan, along with representatives from Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and Ministry of Health (MoH). The MoH representative expressed gratitude to the State of Qatar for the timely assistance, acknowledging the considerable needs of the internally displaced people (IDPs) in the receiving states, particularly those coming from Khartoum.

Dr. Salah Daak, head of QRCS’s office in Sudan, highlighted that this new aid shipment is part of the ongoing airlift operation deployed by the State of Qatar to help the war-affected population. Dr. Daak emphasized that QRCS remains committed to supporting the health system, ensuring that hospitals affected by the conflict can resume their operations and be better equipped to serve IDPs.

Upon arrival, the aid shipment was immediately unloaded and transported to warehouses. Coordination with the relevant authorities is underway to ensure the proper sorting and distribution of the aid to the target areas. The medical equipment and consumables will be supplied to hospitals in the destination regions, enabling them to handle the larger numbers of patients resulting from the influx of IDPs.

In addition to supporting hospitals, the aid items will be distributed directly to the beneficiaries in coordination with the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) and the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS). This collaborative effort aims to effectively reach those in need and provide them with essential supplies.

QRCS’s continuous efforts to send humanitarian aid to Sudan demonstrate the commitment of the State of Qatar in assisting the war-torn country and its people. The support provided through these relief shipments plays a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of those affected by the conflict.

The ongoing partnership between QRCS, Qatar, and Sudan reflects the spirit of solidarity and compassion, serving as a beacon of hope for those facing challenging circumstances. As the situation evolves, QRCS stands ready to continue its support, making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

  • Record Energy Consumption in Bahrain as Heat Soars

Record Energy Consumption in Bahrain as Heat Soars

Bahrain has recorded unprecedented electricity consumption, authorities said, as scorching summer temperatures and high humidity force increased reliance on energy-intensive air-conditioning systems.

Manama’s Electricity and Water Authority said the tiny island state, located in one of the planet’s warmest regions, “recorded its highest-ever electricity consumption rate” on Thursday at 3,798 megawatts.

Beating last year’s record of 3,708 MW, the latest figure came as temperatures on Thursday reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), compounded by 85-percent humidity.

The electricity authority said on social media it “urges all of its customers to adopt practices that promote energy and water conservation in order to help preserve our national resources”.

Life in Bahrain largely moves indoors during the summer months, with the ever-present Arctic blast of air-conditioning systems.

Like other Gulf states, Bahrain is prone to hot and dry summers made warmer by climate change.

Experts predict that the entire region could become uninhabitable by the end of the century if warming trends are not reversed.

Efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change have gained pace in the Gulf as the United Arab Emirates prepares to host the United Nations’ climate summit later this year.

COP28 will take place in the UAE business hub of Dubai in November and December.

Bahrain, located in one of the planet’s warmest regions, has experienced a surge in electricity consumption due to scorching summer temperatures and high humidity. The island state recently recorded its highest-ever electricity consumption rate, surpassing last year’s record. The figure reached 3,798 megawatts, with temperatures peaking at 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and 85-percent humidity. These extreme conditions have led to increased reliance on energy-intensive air-conditioning systems.

In response to this unprecedented electricity consumption, the Electricity and Water Authority of Manama has urged its customers to adopt practices that promote energy and water conservation. By doing so, they aim to preserve Bahrain’s national resources. It is essential for individuals and businesses alike to take proactive measures to reduce their energy consumption during the summer months, as this is when life in Bahrain mostly shifts indoors to escape the intense heat.

Bahrain, like other Gulf states, is prone to hot and dry summers that are further exacerbated by the effects of climate change. If global warming trends continue unchecked, experts predict that the entire region could become uninhabitable by the end of the century. This alarming projection highlights the urgent need for efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

In the Gulf region, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a leader in addressing climate change. The UAE will host the United Nations’ climate summit, COP28, in Dubai later this year. This high-profile event will bring global leaders together to discuss strategies for combatting climate change and finding innovative solutions. The significance of hosting this summit in the UAE underscores the region’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges.

As Bahrain faces unprecedented electricity consumption, it is crucial to prioritize energy and water conservation. Adopting sustainable practices can help preserve national resources and mitigate the effects of climate change. Individuals and businesses should implement measures such as using energy-efficient appliances, optimizing insulation, and reducing unnecessary energy consumption. By making small changes in daily routines, everyone can contribute to reducing the strain on Bahrain’s electricity grid and protecting the environment.

The record-breaking electricity consumption in Bahrain serves as a reminder of the urgent action needed to address climate change. While governments and organizations play a crucial role in implementing large-scale sustainability initiatives, individuals can also make a difference by adopting environmentally conscious habits. By conserving energy and water, Bahrain’s population can contribute to ensuring a sustainable future for the island state.

In conclusion, Bahrain‘s recent surge in electricity consumption highlights the impact of scorching summer temperatures and high humidity on energy-intensive air-conditioning systems. As the island state faces extreme weather conditions, the Electricity and Water Authority of Manama urges its customers to adopt energy and water conservation practices. This call to action aligns with the broader efforts in the Gulf region to address climate change. The upcoming hosting of COP28 in the UAE further emphasizes the commitment of Gulf states to combatting environmental challenges. By prioritizing sustainable practices, Bahrain can work towards preserving its national resources and mitigating the effects of climate change for a more sustainable future.

  • Toronto Public Health Reports First Probable Human Case of West Nile Virus in 2023

Toronto Public Health Reports First Probable Human Case of West Nile Virus in 2023

Toronto Public Health (TPH) announced on Friday the first probable human case of West Nile Virus in 2023 in an adult resident of the city. Although the case is yet to be confirmed by laboratory testing, TPH is urging residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites as the long weekend approaches.

Dr. Eileen De Villa, the city’s medical officer of health, advised residents to use insect repellent, wear light-colored clothing, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts, and take extra care during peak mosquito-biting hours between dusk and dawn.

West Nile Virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes and can lead to symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches, skin rash, and swollen lymph glands. These symptoms typically develop around two to 14 days after being bitten. Older individuals, especially those with compromised immune systems, are at a higher risk of experiencing severe illness from the virus.

In 2022, there were 14 laboratory-confirmed cases of West Nile in Toronto. This year, the city has been actively conducting mosquito surveillance using 22 traps from mid-June through mid-September. So far, 20 batches of mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile.

The recent increase in hot weather in Toronto has raised concerns about a higher risk of mosquito infection and subsequent transmission of the virus. Other regions and cities in the Greater Toronto Area, including Brampton, Markham, and Hamilton, have also reported finding mosquitoes positive for the virus.

As West Nile Virus poses a potential health threat, TPH advises residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites while enjoying the beautiful summer weather.

  • Who Will Win Each Match: Logan Paul vs. Ricochet to Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso at SummerSlam 2023

Who Will Win Each Match: Logan Paul vs. Ricochet to Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso at SummerSlam 2023

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is gearing up for its marquee mid-year event, SummerSlam, which is set to take place at Ford Field, the home stadium of the NFL’s Detroit Lions. With a stacked card featuring eight exciting matches, fans are eagerly anticipating the outcomes of these epic showdowns.

    Logan Paul vs. Ricochet:

Logan Paul has been making waves in the wrestling world despite being a part-timer with just six matches under his belt. However, he has managed to create viral moments in each of his appearances. In this match against Ricochet, the high-intensity action is expected to kick off the night at SummerSlam. Paul, known for his extravagant personality, plans to leave early to attend his brother Jake’s boxing match against Nate Diaz in Dallas. Both wrestlers have the chance to shine and potentially move into the mid-card title conversation. A win for Paul would make him a more believable challenger in the future, considering his infrequent appearances.

    Ronda Rousey vs. Shayna Baszler:

In this intriguing match, Ronda Rousey, a fan of the wrestling industry, faces off against Shayna Baszler. The bout will be contested under “MMA rules,” adding a layer of realism to the feud. While many believe Rousey may leave WWE and possibly return to the UFC after this match, there’s still a possibility of her emerging victorious. However, a win for Baszler would be more fitting, given her impressive wrestling skills and contributions to the division.

    Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes:

Cody Rhodes, one of WWE’s biggest draws, is set to settle his months-long feud with Brock Lesnar. Although Rhodes lost at WrestleMania, a win over Lesnar at SummerSlam would elevate his status and pave the way for a potential main event moment at WrestleMania 40. A loss wouldn’t hurt Rhodes’ popularity, but a victory could set him up for future programs with any champion of his choice.

    SummerSlam Battle Royal:

The Battle Royal is an opportunity for emerging talents to showcase their skills, and all eyes are on LA Knight to emerge victorious. Knight, with a charismatic persona reminiscent of The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, has gained a massive fan following. A win here could lead to a United States Championship shot for him post-SummerSlam.

Intercontinental Championship: Gunther (c) vs. Drew McIntyre:

Gunther’s reign as Intercontinental Champion has been outstanding, and it may be time for him to move to the main event stage and compete for the World Heavyweight Championship. While McIntyre winning the title could create a full-circle moment, an inevitable rematch wouldn’t affect Gunther’s standing as a top-tier competitor.

Women’s Championship: Asuka (c) vs. Bianca Belair vs. Charlotte Flair:

A triple-threat match allows WWE to protect the wrestlers from direct losses. The story revolves around Bianca Belair being the odd woman out despite her dominant championship reign. Charlotte Flair pinning Asuka could progress the storyline while keeping all three stars in the title conversation.

World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins (c) vs. Finn Bálor:

This match is a throwback to 2016 when Finn Bálor won the inaugural Universal Championship but had to relinquish it due to injury. Seth Rollins is at the top of his game, and Bálor is involved in an engaging story with his Judgment Day faction. Damian Priest, the Money in the Bank winner, could potentially cash in his championship opportunity during or after this match.

As SummerSlam approaches, WWE fans are eagerly waiting to witness these epic battles unfold in the ring. The event promises to be a spectacle of excitement, drama, and unforgettable moments that will leave a lasting impact on the wrestling world.

NSA Ajit Doval Attends Ukraine Peace Talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has arrived in Jeddah to participate in a summit of national security advisers and officials being hosted by Saudi Arabia on Saturday to discuss the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Ajit Doval was warmly welcomed at Jeddah Airport by Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Suhel Khan, and Consul General Mohammed Shahid Alam.

The Indian Embassy in Riyadh tweeted, “Shri Ajit Doval, NSA arrived in Jeddah to take part in National Security Advisors’ meeting on Ukraine. He was welcomed at Jeddah Airport by Ambassador Dr Suhel Khan and Consul General Mohd Shahid Alam.”

The meeting is organized in the coastal city of Jeddah to discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plan for peace amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed India’s participation in the summit, stating, “India will participate in this event, and our participation is in consonance with our long-standing position that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward,” said MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.

“India has been invited to a meeting being hosted by Saudi Arabia on Ukraine in Jeddah,” Bagchi replied during a press briefing of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Russia’s state-run Tass news agency reported Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov as saying, “Russia will keep an eye on this meeting” but would need “to fully understand what goals are being set.”

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the summit on July 29, citing “diplomats involved in the discussion.” The talks are scheduled for August 5 and 6 in Jeddah, with around 30 countries attending.

Ukrainian and Western officials are hopeful that the efforts could conclude in a peace summit later this year where global leaders would sign up to shared principles for resolving the war.

The 30 invitees for the Jeddah summit include Chile, Egypt, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Zambia, according to WSJ.

Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said officials from several countries would take part in the Saudi Arabian summit but did not specify when or where the meeting would be held, reported Al Jazeera.

Yermak stated on Telegram that discussions will focus on the Ukrainian Peace Formula, which “contains 10 fundamental points, the implementation of which will not only ensure peace for Ukraine but also create mechanisms to counter future conflicts in the world.”

“We are deeply convinced that the Ukrainian peace plan should be taken as a basis because the war is taking place on our land,” Al Jazeera quoted Yermak as saying.

India has consistently maintained that the Russia-Ukraine conflict must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed India’s readiness to contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, escalating the Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014. The invasion has led to tens of thousands of casualties on both sides, with Russian forces accused of causing mass civilian casualties and torturing captured Ukrainian soldiers. (ANI)

  • Lizzo Faces Lawsuit Alleging Hostile Work Environment from Former Dancers

Lizzo Faces Lawsuit Alleging Hostile Work Environment from Former Dancers

Renowned Grammy-winning artist Lizzo is now the subject of a lawsuit filed by three professional dancers who claim she created a hostile work environment. The dancers, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez, have brought forward a total of nine charges against Lizzo and her team. These allegations span from May 2021 to May 2023 and include weight-shaming, sexually denigrating behavior, preaching about sexuality and Christianity, and participating in disturbing sex shows. The dancers are represented by West Coast Employment Lawyers, who released a statement on the matter.

According to the statement, Lizzo and her management team treated their performers in a shocking manner that contradicts the artist’s public image promoting body positivity and self-love. Ron Zambrano, an attorney at WCEL, expressed his surprise at the discrepancy between the artist’s public persona and the alleged mistreatment of her dancers. He stated that the behavior exhibited towards the dancers was not only illegal, but also demoralizing.

In response to the allegations, the artist took to X Corp, a social media platform, to defend herself. She addressed the claims made by her former employees, noting that their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional. the artist emphasized her work ethic, morals, and respectfulness, stating that she takes her music and performances seriously and holds herself to high standards. While she acknowledged having to make difficult decisions, she made it clear that it was never her intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or undervalued.

Lizzo, who has personally dealt with body shaming, denied the accusations of criticizing or firing an employee because of their weight. She reiterated her commitment to championing women’s rights and emphasized that it is a cause she takes incredibly seriously. However, Zambrano countered the artist’s denial, arguing that her denial of the alleged behavior only added to the emotional distress experienced by his clients. He claimed that the artist’s actions went against her own brand and disappointed her fans.

The lawsuit accuses the artist, her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc., and the captain of her dance team, Shirlene Quigley, of creating an “intolerable” hostile work environment. The suit outlines several instances of alleged misconduct, including repeated exposure to nudity against the dancers’ wills and the sharing of lewd fantasies and tales of sexual encounters. One specific incident mentioned in the court documents involves the artist pressuring the dancers to engage with nude performers in Amsterdam’s red-light district, despite Davis expressing her discomfort and reluctance.

Another allegation in the lawsuit asserts that the artist aggressively confronted Rodriguez, who was resigning due to the mistreatment of Davis. The complaint states that the artist approached Rodriguez with clenched fists, cracking her knuckles while shouting obscenities. Although Lizzo was reportedly restrained, Rodriguez feared for her safety and believed that the artist might physically attack her.

Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that the artist falsely imprisoned Davis by keeping her in a room against her will. the artist allegedly held Davis there until tour staff searched her phone and iCloud storage. The court documents also reveal that Davis and Williams initially met Lizzo in March 2021 as contestants on the reality TV show “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.” Rodriguez joined the dance team in May 2021 after being hired for Lizzo’s “Rumors” music video. Davis and Williams were subsequently fired, while Rodriguez chose to resign due to Lizzo’s alleged mistreatment.

In conclusion, the artist finds herself entangled in a legal battle as three former dancers accuse her of creating a hostile work environment. While the artist vehemently denies the allegations, her former employees maintain that her actions contravene the principles she publicly espouses. The lawsuit sheds light on the conflicting narratives surrounding the artist’s treatment of her dancers and raises questions regarding the disconnect between an artist’s public image and their actions behind closed doors. As the legal proceedings unfold, the industry and the public will closely watch the outcome of this lawsuit and its potential impact on Lizzo‘s reputation.
