Final List of Candidates Approved for UAE’s FNC Elections: Meet the Contenders

The National Elections Committee (NEC) has officially greenlit the list of candidates who will be vying for seats in the UAE’s Federal National Council (FNC) elections this year. A total of 309 candidates are set to compete for FNC membership across the emirates, with significant gender diversity and a range of age groups represented.

Here are some key details about this year’s FNC candidates:

Gender Balance: The candidate pool displays gender diversity, with 59% being men and 41% women. This inclusivity reflects the UAE’s commitment to promoting gender equality and ensuring that women have a voice in the country’s legislative process.

Age Diversity: The candidates also represent a range of age groups. While 36 candidates are between the ages of 25 and 35, a significant majority of 273 candidates are over 36 years old. This diversity in age ensures that the FNC will benefit from a mix of experienced voices and fresh perspectives.

The distribution of candidates across the emirates is as follows:

  • Abu Dhabi: 118 candidates
  • Dubai: 57 candidates
  • Sharjah: 50 candidates
  • Ajman: 21 candidates
  • Ras Al Khaimah: 34 candidates
  • Umm Al Quwain: 14 candidates
  • Fujairah: 15 candidates

Each emirate has a designated number of seats in the FNC, with Abu Dhabi and Dubai having the most seats, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah assigned two seats each. This allocation ensures proportional representation and equal participation from all emirates.

Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of State for FNC Affairs and Chairman of the NEC, emphasized the committee’s commitment to ensuring the success of this year’s elections. He called upon all candidates to adhere to the rules and regulations of electoral campaigns, as outlined in the executive instructions for the 2023 FNC elections.

The upcoming campaign period is set to commence on September 11 and will span 23 days, concluding on September 26, the last day for candidates to withdraw their candidacy.
